Using every ounce of concentration, Jenna tried to ignore the tendrils of mist trying to reach out like long silver fingers to grab her through the windows as they moved deeper into the forest. The twisted black trees bent over the trail and as the mist swirled it was as if they were driving through a coven of witches standing around a steaming cauldron. The moans of the trees as their branches rubbed together in the continuous wind sounded like the hags’ wails and seemed to seep into the truck over the noise of the Beast’s engine. In the darkness red and yellow eyes reflected in the headlights. Swallowing the sudden rush of fear of being trapped in the endless dark tunnel, Jenna looked for a distraction and stared at her phone, scrolling through the files to see if her deputies had added any information. As usual, all their day’s work was listed and up to date. Although Rowley had made countless calls and found zip on the names of military personnel active or retired in Black Rock Falls, he had discovered a women’s support group for widows of men MIA. Jenna opened Rio’s files. He’d spoken to Susie Hartwig, the manager of Aunt Betty’s Café, and had a page of notes. She glanced at Kane, whose silence when driving meant the way ahead was difficult to navigate and, due to the mist, the large boulders and sudden drops on one side of the road had become invisible in the steep incline. They crawled along, bumping over fallen logs and exposed tree roots. “Can you talk?”

“Yeah, I’m good but I can’t risk taking my eyes off the road. It’s like a minefield out there.” Kane slowed to a crawl and eased the truck around a huge boulder. “I don’t recall this many obstacles on the way here.” He cleared his throat. “Problem?”

“The opposite.” Jenna lifted her phone and blinked as the vehicle’s jerky movements made the screen wobble in her hand. “Rio spoke to Susie Hartwig and she was very helpful. She’s given him the names of all the ex-servicemen she knows. He has a list. Six or more would be around the right age and he’s hunted down their addresses. We’ll be good to go first thing in the morning.” She gripped the seat as Kane went so close to the edge of a drop into a swirling mist-filled abyss on her side of the truck she couldn’t take a breath.

“We’ll try talking to them tomorrow.” Kane hunched over the wheel peering into the darkness. “Anything else?”

As the Beast reached the end of the steep hill and the next part of the dirt road evened out, she blew out a long breath. “Yeah, Rowley found a support group for war widows. We might be lucky and find someone who knows both women. I’m going to the beauty parlor as well. I need my bangs trimmed and they’ll fit me in. I might be able to get someone to talk. Sometimes acting like a normal person works better than being sheriff in that situation.
